Resources for Life Passages and Milestones
This page of guidance and documents provides planning resources for the people of God when we gather for worship to mark the significant occasions in our lives. The course of the Christian life is marked by a variety of milestones, sometimes called life passages. The primary passage for the Christian is made in the waters of Holy Baptism. Once a life of faith is begun through baptism, no subsequent passage is made alone. All the times and occasions of life are accompanied by the presence of God made known in Jesus Christ and by the community that he creates. Resources for the major life passages of baptism, marriage, and funerals are found below. Additional resources for other milestones like confirmation, new job, home or child, birthdays, retirements and anniversaries will be provided on this page also. |
Marriage & Wedding Those whom God has joined together
let no one separate. Marriage is a gift of God, intended for the joy and strength of those who enter it and for the well-being of the whole human family. In creation God blessed humankind with mutual companionship, the capacity to love, and the care and nurture of children. God’s faithfulness is the promise in which marriage, too, is grounded. Jesus affirmed the covenant of marriage and revealed God’s own self-giving love on the cross. The Holy Spirit helps those who are united in marriage to be living signs of God’s grace, love, and faithfulness. Holy Baptism Marked with the cross of Christ forever.
God, who is rich in mercy and love, gives us a new birth into a living hope through the sacrament of baptism. By water and the Word God delivers us from sin and death and raises us to new life in Jesus Christ. We are united with all the baptized in the one body of Christ, anointed with the gift of the Holy Spirit, and joined in God's mission for the life of the world. Funeral Whether we live, or whether we die,
we are the Lords. At a person's death, the church shares the grief of those who mourn and remembers the brevity of life on earth. At the funeral we give voice to sorrow, thank God for our loved one, and entrust this companion of our into the hands of God. Trusting in God's promise in baptism that we are claimed by Christ forever, we rest in the sure hope of the resurrection. When the church gathers to mark the end of life, Christ crucified and risen is the witness of worship, the strength of mutual consolation, and the hope of healing.
